Mandø, the Wadden Sea & Seals
Travel by tractor bus across the sea floor with photo stops and stories along the way, explore Mandø village on a guided walk, and hike out to the sandbanks where seals can be seen in their natural habitat — from a respectful distance and in calm surroundings.

“Across the tidal flats – into stillness”
There is something almost magical about travelling across the sea floor. When the tide withdraws, the Wadden Sea opens up — not as a place you simply look at, but as a landscape you move through. On this experience, you get the crossing itself, the stories of Mandø, and the chance to encounter seals in their natural surroundings.
We meet at Okholmvej 5, where the tractor bus is ready. From here, the journey across the tidal flats begins — a calm passage through the wide Wadden Sea landscape, where there is time to truly take it all in. Along the way we stop for photo breaks, and you’ll hear stories about the tide, the flats, the birds, and the life that can be both seen and sensed beneath the surface.
On Mandø, we step off in Mandø village and take a guided walk through the island community, with stories about life here — the houses, the history, storm floods, community spirit, and the unique way of living alongside nature’s forces.
Then we move out into the landscape: We walk along the sea dike from west toward the southeast and head out onto the tidal flats at low tide. It is a special feeling to be surrounded by a landscape that seems endless — and at the same time full of both visible and invisible life.
We walk about 2 km out to the sandbanks, where we can experience the seals. We observe with binoculars from a respectful distance, so we do not disturb the animals’ natural rhythm. Here there is space, silence, and a quiet kind of grandeur.
We then walk back to the island, where the tractor bus picks us up and takes us back to the mainland. The experience ends with the feeling of having been very close — without taking anything from nature.
Practical seals walk info
🚜 The tractor bus return trip across the tidal flats (including photo stops) starts at Okholmvej 5.
👩🏫 Guiding, storytelling, binoculars, and seal observation from a distance will be provided.
🌊 The tour is always planned according to the tide — we never compromise on safety.
🚶♀️ We will walk approx. a total of 8-10 km on varied terrain in about 6 hours (depending on tide and route). This requires a moderate fitness level.
